Crossing the MISSISSIPPI!

Farmington to Carbondale

New state!  Illinois!

Today we crossed the Mississippi River into Chester, Illinois, home of Popeye the Sailor Man.  I’ve been craving vegetables for the past few weeks (since the inside temperature of the Sprinter doesn’t exactly allow for vegetable preservation), and being in the home of the original spinach connoisseur made me want it even more.  We meandered down State Street a bit, looking for a lunch restaurant, but since it’s Sunday, most were closed.  We asked a man atop some scaffolding painting a building where the best place in town was, and he was very adamant that the Harvest House was the BEST place in town, that it was SO GOOD.  So we went there.  And it was a buffet.

In California, buffets definitely have lower quality food.  This place was no exception, everything was either fried or doused in some sort of creamy, unidentifiable sauce.  People on Yahoo seem to like it, however.  I’m probably just spoiled being from California, home of the freshest produce in America.  The buffet did, however have spinach, which made me happy.  At least I got that!

Buffets, as I’ve written before, are extremely common in the midwest.  They’re also notorious for wasting food.  The buffet I visited in Eminence at least recycles the excess in the form of dog food.  Harvest House, however, throws away their leftovers, so they wind up in the landfill.  Bummer.
